Course Objective
This program provides clinicians with the opportunity to learn about:
What is patient abandonment
Standards of care versus treatment protocols
What is malpractice and elements to prove
Managed care and mental health care
What is “appropriate termination”?

Author Bio
David Phillips, D.S.W. is a training and supervising analyst at the Post Graduate Center for Mental Health in New York City.  He is Adjunct Associate Professor at the Wertzweiller School of Social Work of Yeshiva University and has been named a Distinguished Practitioner in Social Work by the National Academies of Practice.  He was Ethics Chair and President of the New York State Society for Clinical Social Work and is now Co-Chair of the Professional Standards Committee of the  Clinical Social Work Federation.  He co-edited a book titled, “Negotiating the Maze of Managed Care, A Guide for Psychotherapists,” published by Brunner Mazel.  The chapter that he wrote for the book is called, “Legal and Ethical Issues in the Era of Managed Care,” and that is what we will discuss today.
