This module presents a system of coping strategies necessary to deal with diabetes diagnosis, management of the illness, and restructuring the family system.
Course Objective
This program provides clinicians with the opportunity to learn about:
• A systemic framing to illustrate the coping strategies necessary to deal with the diagnosis, management of the illness, and restructuring of the family system
• Discussing the impact of diabetes on the family, and an explanation of the systemic and structural family theories
• What is the impact of the diagnosis of a critical illness (diabetes) on the family?
• Chronic illness labeling.

Nurses, Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Addiction Therapists 
Author Bio
JOSEPH  McBRIDE, MSW, BCD. Joseph McBride, MSW, BCD has been a Part-time lecturer since 1998 at the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Work. He is currently in private practice in Lawrenceville, N.J., where he specializes in family therapy, death, dying and bereavement, and coping with chronic illness and behavior problems in children. He has consulted with Compassionate Friends, Pennsylvania SIDS Foundation, US Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime, Victims of Pan Am 103 and many other schools and organizations. He also worked on the landmark NIH Diabetes Control and Complications Trial as well as the Diabetes Prevention Trial. He is the former Chief Social Worker and the Director of Social Work Training at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Center, as well as the Associate Director of the Diabetes Center for Children at Children’s Hospital. Mr. McBride taught previously at Rutgers University School of Social Work. He currently lectures extensively on the areas of family and grief, chronic illness, parenting issues, private practice in social work, and social work supervision. His publications include articles on funeral homes, grief therapy and diabetes.
